Targa Sound Terminal (formerly Sound Refining)

History

Targa Resources operates a petroleum product tank farm on the Hylebos waterway along the northwest edge of the Tacoma tide flats. In 1967, Sound Refining began operating the facility as an asphalt refinery, using crude oil as feedstock. In 1998, a Texas based corporation purchased the assets of Sound Refining. Production stopped and it became a petroleum product tank farm. In 2004, the facility went under new management. In 2011, Sound Refining transitioned to Targa Sound.

Wastewater

Process wastewater is treated at the City of Tacoma Central Sewage Treatment Plant. Stormwater draining from basins surrounding the tank farms is processed through sumps and oil adsorbing filtration fabric before discharging to the Hylebos.

Capacity:

The current volume of tankage within the facility is 970,000 barrels. After completion of new tank storage areas in 2014, the volume of tankage is expected to be approximately 980,000 barrels.
