Tacoma Kraft Company, LLC
Simpson Tacoma Kraft, a subsidiary of Simpson Paper Company, was originally built in
1928 by the Union Bag Company. It is an integrated pulp and paper mill located on a
peninsula bordered by the mouth of the Puyallup River on the northeast, Inner
Commencement Bay on the northwest, and the St. Paul Waterway on the southwest.
It discharges its treated wastewater into Inner Commencement Bay.
The mill is working toward sustainability. Activities include:
- Recycling old corrugated containers for use as about one-third of the fiber
needed for production.
- Participating in EPA's National Environmental Performance Track program from
2001 through 2007. To qualify for the Performance Track program, a facility had
to demonstrate its commitment to sustained environmental compliance, sound
environmental management, continuous improvement, pollution prevention and
public outreach.
- Past participation in EPA's Environmental Leadership Program.
- Measuring progress toward sustainability by participating in Ecology's
Industrial Footprint Project
Capacity:
Employing approximately 400 people, the mill produces about 1300 tons of bleached and
unbleached packaging-grade paper and unbleached kraft pulp each day. It is best known
for producing white top linerboard used as the printable outer surface of corrugated
boxes.
