1913 Marine View Drive
(Formerly Occidental Chemical Marine View Drive)
Site Description
The 1913 Marine View Drive site is 6 acres located near the Hylebos Waterway,
on the northeast edge of the Tacoma tideflats. The site is polluted with toxic
chemicals such as:
Between 1970 and 1973, lime sludge was brought to the site from an Occidental
Chemical Corporation facility and used as fill. Lime sludge is a byproduct of solvent production
and can contain chlorinated organic compounds and SVOCs. Auto fluff is also
present on the site. It is waste left over from shredding old cars for scrap
metal. It often contains PCBs and heavy metals. Other toxic materials were also
used as fill.
Ecology has entered into a cleanup agreement with potentially liable parties
(PLPs) Occidental Chemical Corporation, General Metals of Tacoma, SRS
Properties, and Don Oline. This agreement requires the PLPs to:
- Conduct a Remedial Investigation.
- Complete a Feasibility Study to look at options and choose a cleanup
action.
- Clean up the site to meet Model
Toxics Control Act (70.105D RCW) standards.
