Port of Port Angeles Marine Trades Area

SITE DESCRIPTION

Port of Port Angeles Marine Trades Area is west of downtown Port Angeles, along the waterfront. The property is owned by the Port of Port Angeles and Chevron Texaco and the site includes:
  • Marine terminals 1 and 3
  • A log sort yard
  • The K-Ply plywood plant (formerly PenPly/Rayonier)
  • A former Chevron bulk fuel plant
  • Three former bulk fuel facilities - Standard Oil, Arco, and D&D Distributors/Phillips 66

Site Pollution

Soil and groundwater at the site have been contaminated with many different pollutants, from several sources.  The K-Ply plant area is polluted with hydraulic oil that leaked from machinery.  Over years of operation, the bulk fuel plants leaked petroleum from their tank and piping systems.  Diesel, gasoline, and benzene have also been found in soil and groundwater.

Public Involvement Opportunities

Ecology wants to keep you involved!  You will have the chance to review and comment on key documents during the cleanup process.  Documents can be found at this Web site and at three different repository locations.

Current Work

Ecology is currently working on the Remedial Investigation Report, which will describe the nature and extent of contamination at the site.  A draft of the report will be made available for public comment, and is expected to be ready in 2008.
