USG Interiors Inc. Puyallup
SITE DESCRIPTION
The USG Puyallup site is located at 925 River Road E. in Puyallup, on the
banks of the Puyallup River.
Site Contamination
Before 1983, the site was used to dispose of waste from the USG
Interiors, Inc. (USG) rock wool manufacturing plant in Tacoma. USG's Tacoma
plant used slag from the former Tacoma Asarco smelter to make rock wool. This
slag contained arsenic--a toxic metal. As a result, before 1973, waste from
USG's Tacoma plant had arsenic in it.
In 1984 Ecology and USG entered into an Agreed Order to clean up the site.
From 1984 to 1985, USG dug up and removed waste from the site, and disposed of
it in a hazardous waste landfill. However, testing showed that some arsenic
contamination remained in both soil and groundwater.
What is rock wool?
Rock wool is an insulating and fire-proofing material. It is made by heating
rock until it is molten, and blowing or spinning it into fine fibers.
