Weyerhaeuser Mill A Site-Former

A PUGET SOUND INITIATIVE site – Reaching the goal of a healthy, sustainable Puget Sound now and forever

Background:  This Site is located along Everett’s waterfront adjacent to Port Gardner Bay.  Historical operations at the Site included sawmilling (Bell-Nelson Mill – 1896 to 1901; Weyerhaeuser Lumber Mill – 1901 to 1930s) and pulpmilling operations.  Weyerhaeuser operated a sulfite pulp mill (known as “Mill A”) – which was later converted to a thermomechanical mill in 1975 – at the Site from the 1930s to the early 1980s.  The property was bought by the Port of Everett (Port) in 1983, and the uplands were cleared for use as a log yard in 1987.  Cleanup of this Site will remediate contaminated sediments located in Port Gardner Bay, and will include investigations for upland soil and groundwater quality, which if contaminated, will undergo cleanup.

Status:  Ecology and the Port will work towards entering into an Agreed Order (anticipated in 2011) for cleanup of the Site.  As part of the Agreed Order, the Port will develop a Remedial Investigation and Feasibility Study (RI/FS) work plan to evaluate the nature and extent of Site contamination, an RI/FS Report, and a draft cleanup action plan.  The purpose of the Agreed Order is to protect human health and the environment.
