Chevron 91122 (Hill's Chevron)
A PUGET SOUND INITIATIVE site – Reaching the goal of a healthy,
sustainable Puget Sound
SITE DESCRIPTION
The Hill’s Chevron Site is a gas service station. It is
located in Blaine’s Central Business zone, between Interstate 5 and railroad
tracks. The Site has four underground storage tanks (USTs), two fuel
dispenser islands, and a service station building. Contamination was found
on the Site during excavation of a UST in 1989. The following contaminants
have been found in soil and groundwater at concentrations above state cleanup
levels:
- Total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH)
- Benzene
- Toluene
- Ethylbenzene
- Xylene
These last four compounds, called BTEX, are often found in petroleum products.
Approximately 500 cubic yards of contaminated soil were removed in 1989.
Approximately 25, 200 gallons of contaminated groundwater and “free product”
(petroleum that has not been dissolved in groundwater) were removed in 1994.
However, more study is needed to fully characterize the contamination at the
