Downtown Safeway Site
SITE DESCRIPTION
The Downtown Safeway site is located at 609 4th Avenue East in Olympia and
currently owned by the City of Olympia. The 1.23 acre parcel is home to a
20,000 square foot former Safeway store, a two story wood building, and a 27,000
square foot parking lot.
A 2007 study found several areas of possible contamination, including as many a
five abandoned underground storage tanks. These areas of the site were
investigated further. Both soil and groundwater samples showed
concentrations of several pollutants above state cleanup levels.

The City of Olympia is working with Ecology to investigate and clean up the
site. The City is planning to use the property for the future Olympia City
