SITE DESCRIPTION

The site is located on the west shoreline of Thea Foss Waterway, which is included within the Commencement Bay Nearshore/Tideflats Federal Superfund site.  It was formerly operated as the Consumers Central Heating Plant, providing steam heat to downtown Tacoma.  The site is now vacant and the current owner is Federal Asset Recovery, Inc.




Timeline

1993 - Mercury-contaminated fill is found.
 
1997 - Ecology removes the contamination using state funds.
 
2005 - The shoreline along the entire site is capped as part of the Superfund cleanup in the Thea Foss.
 
2006 - Federal Asset Recovery, Inc. agrees to complete an investigation of the site and repay the state for cleanup costs.  More mercury contamination is removed and the investigation is completed.
 
2007 - Ecology determines that no further cleanup is needed and proposes that the site be removed from the Hazardous Sites List.
