Evergreen Airport

Site Description

The Evergreen Airport site includes approximately 52 acres and is located at 13800 through 14114 SE Mill Plain Boulevard in Vancouver, WA.  The site was formerly used as an airport and contained hangars, office buildings, a runway, control tower and eight additional buildings (leased).  It was developed into an airfield in approximately 1945.  Future planned use of the site will be mixed commercial and residential.

Investigations at the site revealed soil contamination at levels above state cleanup standards from gasoline, diesel and heavy oil-range petroleum hydrocarbons and metals (cadmium, chromium and lead).  Groundwater was not contaminated.

The site entered the VCP program in October 2005. Remedial actions at the site included:

• Demolition of existing site buildings.
• Removal of an underground storage tank and associated underground piping.
• Decommissioning of six septic tanks.
• Removal of eight dry wells.
• Removal of an underground sump and four above-ground storage tanks.
• Excavation and disposal (in landfill) of 1,540 tons of soil (1,340 tons were contaminated).
• Soil and groundwater sampling.
• Backfill of excavation areas with clean soil.

The Cleanup Action Report contains a summary of the cleanup activities completed and results of post-cleanup sampling. Ecology reviewed this report and others to determine if the cleanup was complete. A No Further Action Opinion letter was issued in December 2008.
