Markey Property Parcel 4
 SITE DESCRIPTION
The Washington State Department of Ecology (Ecology) proposes to remove the
Markey Property Parcel 4 site from the state’s Hazardous Sites List. The
Markey Property Parcel 4 site is located at 9520 10th Avenue South, Seattle,
Washington 98108.
The Markey Property Parcel 4 site is situated north of South 96th street
and east of 10th Avenue South in a commercial and industrial district of King
County. The north fork of Hamm Creek runs along the north side of the property.
The site has two buildings occupied by a Sherwin Williams Paint Company store,
Simplex Grinnell Company and NRC Environmental Services. Prior to the
1970s, the site was a truck garden. Between 1977 and 1978, an estimated
50,000 cubic yards of cement kiln dust (CKD), reportedly from Ideal Cement, were
placed on the parcel as fill. Subsequent fill included 1,000 cubic yards
of soil that designated as dangerous waste due to its lead content. The
property owner sued the company responsible for this fill, Bayside Disposal .
Bayside Disposal responded by removing and properly disposing of the dangerous
waste. Based on available information, Ecology added the property to the
Hazardous Site List in 1992. The site was selected for a Site Hazard
Assessment (SHA) and subsequent ranking by the Washington Ranking Method (WARM).
The site was given a WARM ranking (Washington Ranking Method) of “3”and placed
on the Washington State Hazardous Sites List. This ranking is based on a
scale of 1 to 5 where “1” represents the highest relative risk, and “5”
represents the lowest relative risk. This ranking is designed to estimate
the potential threat to human health and the environment, relative to all other
sites in Washington State.
Ecology has determined that the cleanup work at the Markey Property Parcel 4
site meets requirements for cleanup under MTCA and therefore does not pose a
threat to human health or the environment. Ecology proposes to remove the
site from the Hazardous Sites list and wants your input.
