The marine portion of the study area  includes the marine waters and sediments off the shore of the mill property.

Past investigations have found wood debris, dioxins, polychlorinated biphenyls,  and other contamination on the sea floor.  In 2002, Ecology and Rayonier signed an Agreed Order (legal agreement) which directed Rayonier to conduct a more extensive investigation of this contamination.  Samples were taken from sediments and from marine life, including flatfish, crab, and clams.  In 2008, Ecology collected more data.  Rayonier will incorporate all data into a marine data summary report for the Study Area.  This report will be made available for public comment.
