In 2003, the Kitsap County Health Department joined the Tacoma Smelter Plume Team in studying the extent of contamination from the former Asarco Smelter Smokestack. |

2004 Update -- Extended Footprint Study Since 1999, the Department of Ecology (Ecology) and the local health departments in King and Pierce Counties have been studying the soil pollution that came from the Asarco smelter smokestack. To find out how far the soil pollution extends, Ecology has teamed up with the local health departments in King, Kitsap, Pierce, and Thurston counties to plan a final study – the Extended Footprint Study. Ecology provided grants to the four counties to conduct this work. |
