Toxics Cleanup Program

Everett Smelter Cleanup

Ecology continues with Everett Smelter contamination cleanup!

In 2009, Ecology received funding through a bankruptcy settlement with Asarco to continue with cleanup efforts. Ecology is now working with property owners inside the cleanup area to map, sample and clean up properties. Sampling and cleanups for remaining properties are scheduled every year until 2019. This cleanup is completely voluntary and free of charge to property owners in the upland cleanup area. Ecology will share information about future cleanup work as it becomes available.

Latest Cleanup News - April 2012

  • Ecology has completed cleanup and restoration work on 24 properties. By the end of April, most crews will be off properties except for the landscapers who are still caring for some new lawns and landscaping.  In addition, some fencing will remain in place until the sod has established.

  • Ecology staff will begin cleanup work on another group of approximately 55 properties this summer.  Ecology staff will review bids for this year’s cleanup work and select a contractor over the next several weeks.  We hope to have a contractor on board by mid May.

  • Office hours will begin again this May.  Ecology staff (or their consultant) will be available on Tuesday from 9 am until noon Stop by if you have questions or need more information about our work!

If you are outside the cleanup area and still want to test your soil, Ecology recommends you use the Soil Sampling Guidance that was developed for the Tacoma Smelter Site. If you have any questions, please contact an Ecology staff member (contact list on the front page).
