Everett Smelter Cleanup
Upland Cleanup
The Everett Smelter Cleanup site is divided into two cleanup areas,
the
Upland Area and the Lowland Area. The Lowland Area is primarily an
industrial area. The Upland area is a mix of business and residential
areas but is mostly residential. Ecology is managing the Upland and the
Lowland cleanup areas separately although they are both funded through
the ASARCO settlement. For information about the Lowland Cleanup Area,
visit here.
Upland Cleanup Plan
The basic cleanup approach for the Upland Area is to remove
contaminated soil that is accessible to children (not under pavement or
buildings). Cleanup involves removing contaminated soil from residential
yards, replacing it with clean soil, and restoring the landscaping.
for more information about the steps in the cleanup. Ecology will not sample or
cleanup any property without getting permission from the property owner.
This cleanup is free of charge to property owners within the Upland
Cleanup Site.
In 2011, Ecology plans to:
- Clean up approximately 24 more properties in the northeast area of your
neighborhood that have already been sampled.
- Map and sample 71 properties which will be cleaned up in 2012.
Sampling and cleanups for remaining properties are scheduled every year
until 2019. Ecology will share information about future cleanup
work as it becomes available. For a map of the locations for
sampling and cleanups for this year, visit
here.
