Bellingham Bay Regional Background

Ecology evaluated surface sediments in Bellingham Bay to establish regional background values for select bioaccumulative chemicals.  The Bellingham Bay Regional Background Sediment Characterization Final Data Evaluation and Summary Report is now complete.  Please click on the link below under "Documents" to access the report.

Bellingham Bay is the location of a multi-organization, comprehensive cleanup initiative known as the Bellingham Bay Demonstration Pilot.  Under this initiative, Ecology is addressing 12 cleanup sites, including 8 sediment sites. Much of this work includes implementing the newly revised Sediment Management Standards (SMS) rule, Chapter 173-204 WAC.   A key provision in the new SMS rule is the concept of regional background, the concentration of a contaminant that exists in an area due to diffuse sources of pollution rather than a specific source.

Regional background values will be considered as part of establishing sediment cleanup levels.  You may find more information on the SMS rulemaking and other regional background work here.

Technical Workshops.  Ecology conducted a workshop to discuss the Draft Sampling and Analysis Plan on August 19, 2014 and to discuss the Draft Data Package on December 8, 2014.  Comments received at the workshops and in writing were considered to finalize the Sampling and Analysis Plan and develop the draft Data Evaluation and Summary report.
