Dirt Alert! Protect Your Family

Children are at greatest risk from arsenic and lead. If you live in the Tacoma Smelter Plume, you may be exposed to arsenic and lead in the soil.  One of the most important things you can do is take healthy actions and make sure your whole family does, too!

We Can Help You Take Healthy Actions

Ecology and local health departments in Pierce County  and Thurston County have brochures and other outreach materials.  Visit the brochure and publications  page for links to some of these.

If you live in King County, your local health department currently does not have a Dirt Alert program.  Please contact Hannah Aoyagi at hannah.aoyagi@ecy.wa.gov or 360-407-6790 for a  fact sheet and any of the following materials:
  • Nail brush for washing hands after working or playing outside.
  • Child-size gardening gloves.
  • Magnet for reminding you about healthy actions.
  • A children’s music video about soil safety (DVD or VHS).
  • Curriculum for grades K-3 or grades 4-5.
