Arsenic has been used to treat wood used for outdoor structures such as fences, decks, picnic tables, and playground equipment. The chromated copper arsenate (CCA) used in pressure-treated wood can pose a health risk to humans, especially children. As of December 31, 2003, CCA is no longer used to treat new wood. However, stockpiles of CCA-treated wood are still being used and many older wood structures may contain CCA.
The following resources provide information about the health risks of CCA, and how to reduce you and your children’s exposure.
