Port Angeles Harbor Preliminary Sediment Cleanup Objectives
The Port Angeles Harbor Sediments Investigation found many types of pollutants that may pose a threat to human health and the environment, including fisheries and shellfish beds. The Port Angeles Harbor preliminary sediment cleanup objectives will help Ecology set cleanup levels for harbor sediments. A liable person must address contamination at levels that are higher than the cleanup level.
What are Preliminary Sediment Cleanup Objectives?
To set a sediment cleanup level for a site, Ecology begins with the sediment cleanup objective. We may then adjust that number upwards towards the site’s cleanup screening levels based on what it is technically possible to do at the site and the total environmental impacts of cleanup. This gives the cleanup level for the site, which is the concentration that must be met over time.
Ecology uses criteria in the Sediment Management Standards (SMS), which is the state’s cleanup rule for sediments, and information about the site to set sediment cleanup objectives and cleanup screening levels.
Who Will Use This Report and When Will Cleanup Levels Be Set?
The responsible parties will use these Port Angeles Harbor preliminary
sediment cleanup objectives to develop proposed
cleanup levels for the
Port Angeles Rayonier Mill site and the
Western Port Angeles Harbor site.
North Olympic Peninsula regional background study sampling and analysis plan now available.
