The marine portion of the study area  includes the marine waters and sediments off the shore of the mill property.

Marine Data Summary Report

Ecology has released the public review draft Marine Data Summary Report (also called Volume II). The report summarizes data that Rayonier collected about contamination in the marine part of the Study Area. It includes data from earlier studies, such as Ecology’s Port Angeles Harbor Sediments Investigation (completed in 2012).

Ecology is not holding a public comment period on the report now. We will hold a comment period in 2015. The comment period will also include the upland data summary report and Rayonier’s analysis of cleanup options.

You can address questions about the report to site manager Marian Abbett at

Past Investigations

Past investigations have found wood debris, dioxins, polychlorinated biphenyls,  and other contamination on the sea floor.  In 2002, Ecology and Rayonier signed an Agreed Order (legal agreement) which directed Rayonier to conduct a more extensive investigation of this contamination.  Samples were taken from sediments and from marine life, including flatfish, crab, and clams.
