Sampling and Soil Replacement Progress

Study Area

  • Soil Replacement:  We have replaced soil in a total of 190 yards. In 2017, we plan to replace soil in 44 more yards.
  • 2016:  69 yards
  • 2015:  65 yards
  • 2014:  48 yards
  • 2013:    8 yards
  • Total: 190 yards

  • Sampling: Inside the Study Area we reviewed soil sampling data from the EPA and ASARCO to determine if properties qualify.  As a result, we identified 710 properties that qualify for soil replacement.  We do not offer soil sampling inside the Study Area, unless the soil has been significantly disturbed for landscaping or development.

Outside of the Study Area (Tacoma)

  • Soil replacement:  In 2016, we replaced soil on 11 properties with arsenic levels over 230 parts per million, the EPA action level.  In 2015, we removed soil from six properties with arsenic levels over the EPA action level.  In 2016, we started planning with 50 properties outside of the study area for soil replacement in 2018.
  • Sampling: We sampled a total of 2,936 yards and identified 415 yards that qualify for cleanup.  Sampling will continue through 2017.

  • Sampling: We sampled 753 yards on the Island and identified 51 yards that qualify for soil replacement.  We will continue to accept requests for Home Soil Testing and new homeowners.
