Yard Program Updates in Tacoma Area

(Outside the Study Area)

Soil Replacement Progress

Outside of the Study Area, (areas colored in brown in map to right) we started replacing soil on properties with arsenic levels above 230 parts per million (ppm), the EPA action level.
  • In 2016, Ecology replaced soil in 11 yards in Tacoma.
  • In 2015, Ecology replaced soil in six yards in Tacoma.

In 2018, Ecology will begin working on the first large group of yards outside of the Study Area with soil contamination above the Ecology action level of 100 ppm arsenic.

Updated Service Area and Sequence

In 2016 we updated our Yard Program Service Area soil replacement sequence and added the ZZ area to the Yard Program Service Area (see map to right).  With the update, we added 400 more yards in the Tacoma area to the Yard Program Service Area

The soil replacement sequence is based on the percentage of properties that qualify with arsenic over 100 ppm, geographic proximity and total number of properties in a group.  We will start with the darker shades of brown and move to the lighter shades.  In 2018 we will begin soil replacement work in Area A (see map to right).

Sampling Progress:

Ecology and the Tacoma Pierce County Health Department (TPCHD) are continuing to sample yards for arsenic and lead.  So far, we sampled 2,936 yards and identified 415 yards that qualify for soil replacement through the yard program.
  • Areas A, B, C & D:  We completed sampling in these areas in the fall of 2014.
  • Areas E, F, G, H, I, J, K & M:  We completed sampling in these areas in 2015 and 2016.
  • Areas L:  In 2016, TPCHD offered sampling to yards in this area.
  • Areas ZZ:  TPCHD will offer sampling to yards in this area in 2017. This area was offered sampling in 2014.  We are going back to this area to offer sampling to those properties that did not previously participate.

Sign up for free sampling now!

If you own a property in one of the areas A to M or ZZ (see map) and would like to sign up for soil sampling, please complete and return the soil sampling access agreement.  If you are a new homeowner, it is possible that your property has already been sampled.  Please check if there is previous sampling data for your property by going to our public database and entering your address.  We will be ending our Yard Program sampling efforts in 2017.  If you are interested in soil sampling, please sign up now. If you have questions about the program or how to sign-up, please call the Tacoma Smelter Plume line at (360) 407-7688, press 2 for Tacoma Smelter Plume.
