The Washington Department of Ecology's Sediment Management Unit
has halted efforts to update the Sediment Management Standards,
Chapter 173-204 WAC. While rulemaking activity has been halted, this
page contains background information useful for understanding some
of the issues that were to be included in the proposed revisions to
the Sediment Management Standards ("SMS").
Sediment Management Standards Rulemaking HaltedThe Department of Ecology has decided to halt Sediment Management Standards rulemaking and refocus resources on implementing the current SMS rule. On Dec. 30, 1999, Director Tom Fitzsimmons signed a letter explaining the decision not to proceed with the rule revisions. The completed letter is linked below and an excerpt is presented here.

The September 22, 1999 SMS Implementation Committee meeting has been canceled. We intended to describe the proposed rule and how comments on the June 1999 draft amendments will be addressed when preparing the proposed rule. A summary of the July 30 SMS Implementation Committee meeting is linked below. Please review the summary and let us know if we have correctly summarized key points and concerns.
