use a system of "Watershed Resource Inventory Areas" or "WRIAs" to refer
to the state's major watershed basins.(1)
This section contains maps by WRIA that show, in greater detail, the
streams that Ecology proposes to protect for char.

agencies frequently use an alternative watershed system based on USGS
Cataloging Units or "HUCs" (Hydrological Unit Codes). The federal
system is similar to the WRIA system except for differing basin
groupings and the federal units extending beyond the Washington state
boundary into Canada, Oregon, and Idaho. Some of our WRIA maps show
portions of the overlapping USGS Cataloging Units where they help to
show how watersheds extend past the state boundary.
