Control of Toxic Chemicals in Puget Sound
Phase 3:  Targeting Priority Toxic Sources

Sub-Task A:  Quantify Toxics from Roadways

The purpose of this sub-task is to more accurately and credibly quantify the loadings of toxic chemicals from roadways to Puget Sound through collection and analyses of environmental samples. Work to be accomplished includes:

(a) For each of five roadway categories, identify four different locations where samples of runoff from pavements may be collected (a total of 20 locations). The five roadway categories are residential side streets, arterial and collector roads, highways, retail parking lots, and low-traffic parking lots. The different locations will include representatives of urban, rural, and agricultural areas.

(b) During a 9-month period that covers both wet and dry seasons, collect two samples of runoff from each location.

(c) Analyze the samples for the chemicals of concern (e.g. arsenic, metals, petroleum products) minus DDT & metabolites, total PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls), and dioxins. The full list of "chemicals of concern" is identified in the Phase 1 report.

(d) Integrate the sampling results with the results from previous phases to refine the estimates of loadings of toxic chemicals from roadways to Puget Sound.
