Control of Toxic Chemicals in Puget Sound
Phase 2:  Improve Loading Estimates

Sub-Task C:  Improve Loading Estimates for Sediments

This work will evaluate the flux of toxic contaminants to and from surficial marine sediments and by burial to deeper sediments. This will fill a data gap identified by the Phase 1 Toxics Loading project. Ecology will use a conceptual model to qualitatively address the flux of toxics to and from contaminated sediment sites in the Puget Sound ecosystem. The goal is to identify and prioritize the factors governing the movement of toxics to and from contaminated sediment sites and the water column. Results from the project will include a better understanding of the flux of toxic chemicals to and from surficial marine sediments and removal from the ecosystem by burial to deeper sediments.

The Department of Ecology's Toxics Cleanup Program will oversee this sub-task.
