Control of Toxic Chemicals in Puget Sound
Phase 2: Improve Loading Estimates

Sub-Task F:  Upgrade a Simple Numerical Model of Puget Sound

This work will expand the capabilities of an already existing numerical model to predict the effects of loading toxic contaminants on the concentrations of those contaminants in the waters and biota of Puget Sound.  Ecology will apply the model of Puget Sound for circulation, fate, and transport of PCBs, and link it to a food web bioaccumulation model.  The resulting upgraded model will be readily extendable for use with several other toxic chemicals.  Ecology will use the results of the modeling analyses to evaluate the responses of the Puget Sound system to potential management actions such as reducing external loading, reducing sediment concentrations, etc.

The Department of Ecology's Environmental Assessment Program will oversee this sub-task.
