The Status

Due to the size and complexity of the Walla Walla watershed, Ecology analyzed some water quality parameters individually, some in small groups. So, the watershed has four different water quality improvement projects (also know as Total Maximum Daily Loads, or TMDLs) under development for the watershed:

Water quality improvement reports (or WQIRs) include results from a technical study and a general strategy to improve water quality. Ecology’s field monitoring data and analysis is summarized in the technical part of the report.

The Walla Walla Watershed Planning Unit’s Water Quality Subcommittee reviewed the technical analysis and helped Ecology staff write the implementation strategies for these reports.  After the public has had a 30-day chance to review the WQIRs, any needed changes are made.  Ecology then sends the reports to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for approval. After EPA approves all four of the WQIRs, a more detailed plan to improve water quality will be completed.
