- Okanogan Pesticide Collection Partnership: Keeping Pollution Out of the Water
In 2001, the Washington State Department of Ecology began a water quality cleanup project (also known as a TMDL) due to elevated levels of DDT and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the lower Okanogan River watershed. Ecology staff worked with Joe Hoffman, of WA′s Department of Agriculture′s waste pesticide program, to promote a waste pesticide pickup program. To date, the program′s collection events have picked up
about sixty pounds of unused DDT pesticides in the Oroville area of the
Okanogan Valley. This is equivalent to more than 350 years of DDT pollution entering the Okanogan River from the tributaries and permitted dischargers in this area.
