Horse Heaven Hills Project

The Project

OCR and Klickitat County are investigating potential storage sites in the Horse Heaven Hills. OCR provided funding for a pre-appraisal  study that was completed in 2010. After reviewing the report, OCR and the county selected an aquifer storage and retrieval site and two surface storage sites--one at Alder and and the other at Switzler--for further study.

The appraisal study will be conducted in 2011. It will make an initial determination  as to whether the sites are viable economically, geologically, environmentally, etc. Once the appraisal study is completed, OCR will use the information it provides to decide if further funding for an environmental impact statement, and after that, construction, is warranted.

Opportunities

If all three sites are built, 105,000 acre-feet of water will be added to the region's water supply. Two-thirds of the added water will go to out-of-stream use. The remainder will be used to enhance streamflows.

Expected Outcomes

If the three sites are built:

  • Nearly 70,000 acre-feet of water will be allocated for out-of-stream use.
  • Approximately 35,000 acre-feet of water of water will be put instream to enhance streamflows.
