Columbia River Basin Storage Options - Shanker's Bend Storage

Similkameen Appraisal Study

Shanker's Bend on Similkameen River

Update (9/30/11): The Okanogan Public Utility District decided against building this project (See "Petition for Surrender of Preliminary Permit," dated September 26. 2011).

The Okanogan Public Utility District (PUD) studied the potential for a storage facility/dam at Shanker’s Bend on the Similkameen River, a site that has been considered for construction of a dam since the 1940s. The proposed site is located a short distance upstream from the existing Enloe Dam. The Shanker’s Bend project is viewed as having at least three possible configurations:

In 2007, Ecology provided $300,000 for the PUD to conduct an appraisal level review of the site. Recently completed, the Appraisal report is now available for download.

Similkameen River Storage Project Executive Summary

This appraisal level analysis concluded that constructing any of the three dam height alternatives  on the Similkameen River is potentially viable from an engineering standpoint. Each alternative presents important impacts and would require extensive consultation and mitigation efforts (proportionate to their impacts) in order to reach an agreement with affected parties, agencies and tribes.
