On April 7, 2008 Ecology received a Petition from the Squaxin Island Tribe requesting an Amendment to the Kennedy-Goldsborough Instream Resource Protection Program Rule, Chapter 173-514 WAC. The petition requests that Ecology close ground and surface waters in the Johns Creek Area to further consumptive appropriation, including permit exempt uses.
Ecology has denied the Squaxin Island Tribe's request to halt all future surface and groundwater withdrawals from the Johns Creek basin near Shelton. Instead, Ecology announced plans to work with the city and port of Shelton, Mason County, and Squaxin Island Tribe in other long-term efforts to address water shortage concerns in the Johns Creek Basin.
