TECHNOLOGY PRESENT FUTURE ECOLOGY'S
AREA STANDARD STANDARD COMPLIANCE STATUS
Host-level 370 Architecture POSIX Ecology purchases mainframe
Computer Operating MVS/CICS services from DIS.
System Ecology has a host-level
cashiering system running on a
PRIME minicomputer which is
being replaced. Ecology has a
host-level application
(HWIMSy) running on a UNIX
system.
Client/Server DOS, OS/2, POSIX In 1993, Ecology adopted DOS
Operating Systems Windows (5.0 and 6.2x) and Windows 3.1
UNIX, POSIX or Windows for Workgroups 3.11
as the standard non-GIS
operating systems. In April
1996, Windows 95 was
recommended as an addition to
the existing desktop operating
systems. It will be installed
on an as-needed basis.
In July, 1993 Ecology adopted
ARC/ INFO (workstation
version) as the GIS software
standard, to be run under
Sun/Operating System or Data
General/Unix.
After an extensive
client/server hardware review,
the recommendation was made to
purchase Hewlett-Packard
mini-computers to support
application development
activities and new agency
systems. Three HP 9000
computers have been purchased:
Model H-30 in November 1994,
Model H-35 in April 1995, and
Model K-200 in April 1996.
No new applications are
planned for development on the
IBM AS/400. It will continue
to provide limited client/
server support. It is
anticipated this technology
will be phased out during the
97-99 biennium.
As time and funds permit,
Ecology will also replace the
existing Prime minicomputer.
Database Systems SQL, DB2, Legacy SQL Ecology has selected Sybase
Systems (Windows NT or Unix) as its
high-end relational data
base management software.
Microsoft Access 2.0 has
been selected as the
standard low-end desktop
relational data base
management software.
Ecology plans to replace
their Prime system with an
SQL-compliant system as
funding permits.
Ecology has several legacy
systems which are not SQL
compliant. These include
limited DIS mainframe
systems and systems provided
by external entities such as
the EPA.
Internet Protocol TCP/IP ISO/OSI Ecology's standards include
IPX, required for the
agency's Novell environment,
and TCP/IP, required by
Microsoft Windows NT or
UNIX-based operating systems
and by individuals who need
access to the Internet.
Wiring: HQ and regional offices are
Work Area UTP Fiber, UTP fully UTP-compliant.
Ecology's new HQ building
Intrabuilding UTP, Fiber Fiber has a fiber backbone.
Distribution wiring of HQ
and regional office
buildings is UTP-compliant.
Ecology's interbuilding
Interbuilding As provided by Fiber wiring is provided by U.S.
US West West and DIS, both of which
select the type of wiring to
be used.
Local Area Network 802.3, 802.5 802.3, 802.5, Ecology's networks are 802.3
802.6 (Ethernet) and 802.5 (Token
Ring) compliant.
Approximately 5% of
Ecology's nodes are 802.5.
