2009 Storming the Sound Conference
South Puget Sound

Please join us to explore and foster models and best practices for Puget Sound environmental and sustainability education.

Storming the Sound is a FREE one-day conference for environmental and sustainability educators in the South Puget Sound region. This is a great opportunity for teachers, non-formal educators, environmental organizations with education programs, and students with an interest in a career in environmental education to:

  • Learn about other Puget Sound environmental education programs.
  • Bring home practical strategies and tactics you can use.
  • Gain skills and insights with experts and capable peers.
  • Share insights and network with other educators.
  • Engage and grow in sessions where everyone is a participant.
  • Exchange ideas and experiences to help you develop new perspectives and approaches.

This conference is FREE but we would appreciate a $10 donation at the door. Lunch is provided. Advance registration is required at the link below. Space is limited, so register early!

Conference Highlights Include:

  • Key Note Address - Jessie Barham: Restoration Biologist, Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge.
  • Successful volunteer work parties – how do you do it? Learn how to conduct volunteer restoration work parties and cut through the red tape and get the job done. When permits are required, how a Joint Aquatics Resource Permit can help you, which key agencies to call and coordinate with, working with local elected officials, resolving liability issues, getting tools, and developing volunteers while having fun!
  • Environmental education – the school connection: Do you have great programs to offer schools, but teachers seldom contact you? Is your program only one of many competing for attention from the same few grade levels? Do you currently offer a wide menu of resources for teachers but wish you could be more strategic about how you work with local schools? Learn how Environmental Educators in Thurston County have been coordinating their school outreach activities, aligning EE offerings with new Science Standards, and marketing their programs to local teachers.
  • Introducing Puget Sound through exhibit design and interpretive interactions: Puget Sound is our big back yard but many residents know little about it. In this workshop, Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium staff will give an overview of their approach to introducing visitors to Puget Sound; the design and messaging of the aquarium’s Around the Sound exhibit, hands-on informal activities and presentations introducing ecological concepts of beach zones, food webs, and marine animals. Also learn how the Youth volunteer Team is helping to deliver the aquariums messaging to visitors.
  • New resources – Hazards on the Homefront and Toxic Free Tips: This session will introduce attendees to two free resources – the newly revised Hazards on the Homefront curriculum and the Toxic Free Tips information program. Hazards on the Homefront is a curriculum on household hazardous waste for the 6-12th grades. It was developed in conjunction with the Local Hazardous Waste Management Program in King County, through a grant from EPA.
  • Estuaries in the classroom: Learn how to connect students with the estuary in our backyard! Educators will participate in classroom activities that satisfy the state’s current Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALR’s) as well as hands-on experiences appropriate for classrooms. Local estuarine resources and options for estuary-related field trips will also be provided. This session will also define MWEE’s (Meaningful Watershed Education Experiences) and offer examples of implementing them in the classroom with a special focus on Estuary Education. Designed for grades 4-6, but can be adapted for other age groups.
  • Culminating Projects 101: Are you wondering how to connect your students to real world activities that make meaningful senior culminating projects? Are you a student looking for an exciting project focused on the natural world? Learn the basics of the senior culminating project program and participate in a typical culminating project activity involving the WA NatureMapping data collection process.
