To improve the understanding of coastal uplands and wetlands, and their linkages with the distribution, abundance, and health of living marine resources.

The 1992 Wetlands Inventory was carried out for the Washington State Department of Ecology by the NOAA Coastal Services Center under EPA grant funding. This data set utilized Landsat 5 and 7 Thematic Mapper scenes which were analyzed according to the Coastal Change Analysis Program (C-CAP) protocol to determine land cover.

The Department of Ecology created the Wetlands Inventory by extracting the wetlands land cover classifications from the overall land cover layer. The following classifications were extracted for the Wetlands Inventory:

Estuarine Aquatic Bed

Estuarine Emergent Wetland

Estuarine Forested Wetland

Estuarine Scrub/Shrub Wetland

Palustrine Aquatic Bed

Palustrine Emergent Wetland

Palustrine Forested Wetland

Palustrine Scrub/Shrub Wetland

Potentially Disturbed Wetlands

Unconsolidated Shore

The 1992 classification is a combination of the 1996 land cover classification that had not changed between 1992 and 1996, and a classifiation of the changed areas based on 1996 Landsat TM imagery. The Landsat TM imagery was collected from 7/7/1991 to 8/21/1996.
