Abstract:
This data set is a 1996 era forest canopy map for Coastal Washington. This map is derived from the 1996 land cover map. Forest categories (Deciduous, Mixed, Evergreen, and Palustrine Forest) have been coded to value 1. All other land cover categories were coded to 0. Forest is defined as areas of woody vegetation greater than or equal 5 meters tall and having greater than or equal to 40 percent canopy cover.
Purpose:
To improve the understanding of water quality issues by assessing changes in forest canopy between 1991 and 2001
Supplemental_Information: Similar data sets occur for 2001 and 1991.

Landsat scenes were georeferenced by Eros Data Center. Spatial accuracy assessed by Space Imaging is found to be to 2 pixels accuracy or less.

Process_Description:
The initial land cover map was obtained from National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coastal Services Center (CSC)/Coastal Change Analysis Program (C-CAP). Continuous impervious data was obtained from the USGS NLCD 2001 program. Impervious values of 20 - 100% were imbedded into the original land cover map. Both sets of developed classes were determined from the same impervious data set. Additional minor edits were made to the land cover map. Since the impervious data set was based on 2001 imagery, the impervious classes were reviewed against the 1996 imagery to ensure that all areas that were not impervious 1996 were mapped to the correct land cover class. The revised land cover map was coded into a binary map. Forest classes (Deciduous, Mixed, Evergreen, and Palustrine Forest) were coded to value 1 and all other classes were coded to value 0.
