Tracking Data Attributes
Ecology databases should support the following spatial features and address methods throughout agency level database systems. This structure will insure: consistency; understanding; and ease of integration between both tabular and geospatial data systems.
A spatial address refers to the geographic point location of an object, and is used to define the point of that object or "Ecology thing" that information is being collected about (e.g. well, spill, facility).
The standard of point data collection method is in latitude-longitude degrees, minutes, seconds. This allows one standard way to collect and report information within the agency. This suggested format will provide the agency with greater pay back in uniformity, ease of data comparison and compilation, and lessen the storage of redundant data.
Physical Database Implementation
Physical Database Implementation Assumptions:
A unique or system generated identifier (ID) is required for each record stored in the tabular database (external to ArcInfo). It is suggested that a unique identifying system be established for the "object" being tracked. If you're interested in finding out if a unique identifier already exists for the object you're tracking, or to learning more about establishing one then contact your programs GIS representative or agency Data Administration.
It is assumed that an explicit description is being collected and carried in the tabular database (external to ArcInfo). It is important that a description is available for the "object" that's being tracked. This attribute field will describe the geographic characteristics of the map feature you wish to map.
Physical edit check or validation procedures should be established and run against the coordinate values and other attributes prior to being committed to the database system(s).

This information is meant to assist staff in input the correct accuracy code for location of point data. When you collect a latitude and longitude location for a feature in your database, you are also asked to provide information showing how accurate that location is. The Accuracy Code column shows your choices in the Coordinate Point Accuracy Level Code field. The Corresponding Collection Methods column describes some of the most common methods used to get an accuracy of that level. If you are using a 7.5' Quad map to get your location, the Measurement Error column shows how close you need to get to the true location to get that accuracy code.
7.5' Quad Accuracy Code Corresponding Collections Methods Measurement Errors
| 1 | < 3.33 feet (1 meter) GPS with Differential calculation and Ground Stations |
| 2 | +- 10 feet (3 meters) GPS with Open Forest Canopy or with Closed Canopy and Differential |
| 3 | +- 20 feet (6 meters) GPS with no error correcting or ground stations |
| 4 | +- 40 feet (12 meters) USGS 7.5' Quad Sheet or other 1:24,000 scale map data (feature printed on map) .02 inches |
| 5 | +- 100 feet (35 meters) USGS 15' Quad Sheet or other 1:48,000 scale map data (feature printed on map) .05 inches |
| 6 | +- 180 feet (55 meters) USGS 1:100,000 Scale Sheet or other 1:100K data (feature printed on map) .09 inches |
| 7 | +- 250 feet to nearest Quarter/Quarter/Quarter Section (10 acres) 263 feet 0.125 inches |
| 8 | +- 500 feet to nearest Quarter/Quarter Section (40 acres) 526 feet 0.25 inches |
| 9 | +- 1000 feet to nearest Quarter Section (160 acres) 1053 feet 0.5 inches |

Sources of Information for Collection Method Accuracies
Codes 1,2,3 Based on Vendor GPS information. Will vary depending on type of GPS Unit and method of differential calculation used.
Codes 4,5,6 These accuracies assume that the feature you are locating is printed on the map. When locating a feature that is not printed on the map (e.g. a water right ) by using the neighboring map features (streams, roads, section lines, topo), you will be less accurate.
The Facility/Site BSD meeting on 9/11/95 estimated that a person was likely to be within 1/8 inch when locating non-printed features from a 7 1/2" quad map, which would translate to a +-250 foot error.
Codes 7 through 10 calculated by Mel Schaefer's formula SQRT( .5/pi * (A)) where A = area in square feet and pi = 3.1417.
